Denpasar

Denpasar is the capital city and main hub of the Indonesian province of Bali, in the southern part of the island. Laid-back Sanur Beach on the east coast offers sunrise views. The nearby Pura Blanjong Temple contains a stone pillar with a 10th-century inscription. The Bali Museum displays a large collection of Balinese cultural artefacts, including traditional costumes and religious items. With a population of 491,500 (2002), it is the capital of the province of Bali.
The center of the city is the Puputan Square , which in 1906 reminds us of the ritual mass murder (‘Puputan’). The prince and his court at the time opposed a Dutch military power, which had landed in Sanur, and had entered the city. To avoid a shameful defeat, they directed themselves with the Kris or ran into the Dutch gunfire. Up to this point, the center of the Principality was “Badung.” With the extinction of the Regency by colonial income, the city was given a new name. Because of its important function as a trade center, it was then called Denpasar (meaning “central market”). The imperial stamp “Pura Jagatnatha”, destroyed in Puputan in 1906, was rebuilt in 1908. Today, Badung is the district (county) on the left side from Denpasar since the city borders were defined in 1992. Denpasar is home to the traditional seaside resort of Sanur, which is highly respected by the Balinese for ritual cleansing and concluding ceremonies of incendiary burns (nests). There, on the beach, is the temple of Barunas, the god of the sea. Denpasar is an important traffic hub in Bali. Also close by is the Denpasar Ngurah Rai International Airport. Udayana University is based in the city. The shopping center Plaza Bali has its headquarters here.
